‘Best local album of the year’ artist CalicoLoco (Episode 1030)

I’m joined by the self-described “cutest band in Chicago,” CalicoLoco. Very recently, their album, “I Love Myself,” was picked as “Best Local Album of the Year” in the Chicago Reader’s “Best of Chicago” 2024 survey.

Dani and Zeke from CalicoLoco joined me for empanadas from Cafe Tola on Southport, and we talked about:

  • What was it about the album that connected with people in the way it did?
  • Headlining Metro
  • The high price of candles
  • What it takes to get a place painted these days
  • Their meticulous approach to recording

I hear a real joy and honesty in the songs CalicoLoco makes, and if this is your first go-round with the band, I think you’ll really enjoy “I Love Myself.”
