Alex Pancoe discovered he had a brain tumor at the age of 18. Years later, he’s wholly dedicated to giving back to Lurie Children’s Hospital, whose doctors saved his life. The most conspicuous way Pancoe’s giving back? Mountain climbing. Like, serious mountain climbing: The Explorers Grand Slam, which includes climbing the highest mountains on each continent and cross country skiing the north and south poles.
Over food from Michael’s Hot Dogs in Highland Park (1879 2nd St, Highland Park, IL 60035), we discussed:
- We had two jumbo dogs with everything… other than sauerkraut. Wait… sauerkraut??
- No sooner do I unwrap my dog than I start losing ingredients in the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston’s CX-9.
- Alex’s brain tumor, discovered when he was 18.
- What’s involved with the Explorers Grand Slam.
- Climbing Mount Everest.
- Pancoe’s near-death experience in Colorado, which ended with a rescue from the High Altitude Army National Guard, who arrived in a Blackhawk helicopter: “I actually made goodbye videos to friends.”
- 5 mountains down, 2 to go.
- Almost halfway to generating one million dollars for Lurie Children’s Hospitals!
- Donations don’t go to mountain climbing; they go directly to Lurie’s research and pediatric brain tumor program.
- Car Con Carne is appearing live at the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston on 12/22 at 2pm! Join us for live music in a car!
- What to wear in Antarctica.
- What did climbing Kilimanjaro feel like?
